This year I signed up for the Polymer Clay Adventure. I’m generally not very good at following a tutorial literally, but I thought this year it would be a good exercise to try a run through at least once.

15825970_681027948725455_1872727662942980356_n The first tutorial I had a go at was a combination of polymer clay beads (by Kira Slye) and wire crochet (by Yoola). I almost managed to make something similar.

I used carved beads (from another of the retreat tutorials) for these earrings. I didn’t have gold hooks so I made some spirals that I attached to steel studs. I thought the focal beads were a bit too chunky so I added another bead to give the earrings more length.

Pendant by Cate van Alphen

I also made a pendant with a stamp textured bead. When I made this bead I thought the edges were a bit fat so I pinched them and added a slight wave. Some of the purple coating had cracked off the wire by the time I worked the bottom row, but I thought it picked up the gold mica on the bead quite nicely so I still used it.

I made another pair of carved beads, this time in silver, since I thought the first ones were a bit fat. I included some black beads in the wire crochet but they are a bit too similar to the bead colour and don’t really stand out.

By the time I got to the next silver carved bead my fingers were objecting to the crochet (I think my wire is too hard) so I decided to weave a little cap instead. I also scribbled in some scratches. This is purely for textural effect and is in no way related to the fact that the bead got scratched while I was working on the wire weaving. 😉

I also made a pair of purple beads similar to Kira’s, but I haven’t yet decided what to do with them.

Giveaway

If you’d like any (or all) of the pendants and you are willing to pay for the postage*, pop a comment here on my blog before the end of January. If more than one person wants a pendant I’ll do a random selection.

**Edit: The Auction is now finished & this giveaway is closed.**

This year I took part in Jen Cameron’s Art Charm Exchange. The way it works is that you send in 11 charms, and get back 10 art charms from different artists (one of them is your own). The 11th charm goes towards the Auction to benefit Beads of Courage.

To make it an even number, I decided to make 12 polymer clay charms, so there is one charm to give away 🙂 Have a look at my reveal post to see the inspiration behind the phoenix and it’s feather, and the blog hop to see all the charms made by the other artists.

All you need to do to take part in the giveaway is share the link to the AUCTION (or even better, place a bid) and let me know in a comment here that you have done so. Pop in a comment for each share for more chances to win. Please include an email contact. Since a phoenix can SOAR around the world, this giveaway is open to international people too :).

Because the auction is intended to raise money for Beads of Courage, I don’t want this giveaway to discourage you from bidding on the charms there. So, if you happen to win both the auction for my charm, and this giveaway I’ll give you a £20 voucher for either my Jewellery or Component store on Etsy instead (unless you actually want a pair of charms *cough*earrings*cough*).

I’ll announce the winner after the auction completes.

Good luck!

Welcome to my reveal for the 8th Bead Soup Blog Party. To continue the bead sharing, I’m giving away a set of handmade beads (keep reading to the bottom of this post for details). Here is the lovely bead soup sent to me sent to me by my partner Wendy Chamberlain.

bead soup with embroidered focal

My first thoughts when I saw the delicious mix of purple beads and silver caps was “Earrings!” (I LOVE making earrings.)

But I cried, “The point of the blog party is to use the focal and the clasp…”

“But look, the beads are all in pairs. Earrings!”

It was obvious to me that the pretty clasp and the pendant belonged together in the same necklace, so I decided to make some polymer clay beads inspired by the embroidery on the pendant. That way I could make the necklace and still have the mixed beads to play with for earrings. 🙂

I also used some green dyed lava cube beads that matched the colour of the leaves on the pendant and some silver seed beads.

I love the texture that the crochet beads give.

And then I made some earrings… 16 pairs in fact!

Thank you Wendy for the wonderful beads, and thank you Lori for all your hard work organising the party. Now have a look at what all the other participants have made, I know I will.

Giveaway Time!

* EDIT – Giveaway is now closed. *

Luckily I was able to stop making earring before I used all the polymer clay beads I had made, so I am giving away a set of 8 ‘Embroidered Pearl’ beads. Just let me know in the comments that you would like to be included in the draw (join in even if you are international). I’ll announce the winner by 1st June 2014.

My Bird Cuff became a Mother’s Day gift, however the mother in question has 5 children and there were only 4 birds on the bracelet. Therefore I made an additional pendant using another birdy so that there are now 5 in the set.

**Edit – entries now closed**

In my previous post I asked you to vote on what prize you’d want for a giveaway. Believe it or not, these items are all related. I started off with the silly joke “What’s black and white and red all over?” *

So without futher ado here are the contestants…

In third place was “Pendant”.
Polymer clay pendant

In second place was “Beads”.
nugget beads

Which means “Earrings” got the most votes and will be the giveaway prize.

I’ve used my handmade polymer clay beads and red crystals on black coated copper wire. The ear-wires are black niobium so they are hypo-allergenic.

Leave a comment here to win. Leave another comment if you ‘Like’ my facebook page. I’ll choose a random winner from all comments left before midnight (GMT) 20 November 2013. (International folks welcome.)

I’ll try to announce the winner next Friday. Good luck 🙂
