I have finally finished editing and uploading a tutorial for making a kaleidoscope cane. I have the footage where I used this cane to make beads, but as you can tell I’m pretty slow at the editing phase so I’m not sure when that will be complete.

This is part of the sample challenge that I set for myself. If you’d like to join in too, get yourself 24 different colours of polymer clay that are 1oz each and use them all up. You can use an actual sample pack or use what you’ve got and mix up your own colours (that’s what I did). Tag what you make with #24ozPolymerClay so that we can find each other on the socials.

Enjoy!

I have been making some green jewellery using the polymer clay beads I made last year. These, and other green goodies, are now available in my Folksy store.

I also made some earrings using my Blue Palette.

I have just found and listed this orange kaleidoscope pattern pendant in my Etsy shop.

I made the cane earlier this year when I was working with my orange colour palette, but in all the confusion of the impending move this pendant slipped between the cracks.

We were away this weekend, so I’ve kept my 2015 Polymer Clay Challenge piece pretty simple this week. I made a pair of shank buttons using the blue kaleidoscope cane from last week.

I think they’d make a nice pair of vintage style clip on earrings :). Maybe I should make another pair without the shanks so I can glue on earring findings?

Like last week, I cut out the pattern slightly off centre – although I think I should have offset the pattern a bit more to get the asymmetric look I wanted.

My daughter woke me up early this week so I made a kaleidoscope cane using my blue palette. Unfortunately I didn’t end up with that much time to actually make beads, so I’ve only got one pair of headpins to show for this week of the 2015 Polymer Clay Challenge.

I cut the sheet of kaleidoscope pattern out of alignment (on purpose), so the patterns on each side are slightly different.

I made earrings using some of the green headpins I made and it was so much fun I think I’ll probably do the same with these.

I usually post my weekly polymer clay challenge piece on a Thursday, but I decided to do it early this week as I wanted to make some kaleidoscope humbug beads and today is the last day of orange. 😮

I didn’t manage to get the beads the same size as each other, but I did get better at not distorting the kaleidoscope pattern. I also got the corners sharper on the later beads (if you compare with the first bead on the right).

I can’t believe it’s already time to change colour palette! I thought I’d get bored after a week, and need work with several different palettes based around orange. As it is I feel I was only just getting warmed up and I’m a little sad to be saying goodbye to orange.

The biggest challenge with blogging something I’ve made every week is not the polymer clay but the photography. Waiting for a sunbeam, so I can photograph using natural light, in Northern England is difficult. In winter it’s even more unlikely. A sunbeam in England, in winter on a Tuesday or Thursday morning (when someone can look after my girls) is practically impossible. So I have had to resort to using a flood lamp for taking my photos, and the results are a bit grungy.

I made a shank button using the kaleidoscope cane I made earlier. I love how the shank button structure doesn’t interfere with the kaleidoscope design.

I liked the button so much I even signed the back ;).

I also made a wire hook which was a bit of a trauma. I wanted the wire to be flat. Previously I have used a DIY hammer (with clunky results), so for my birthday I got a nylon hammer specifically for wire. Unfortunately, this did not have any visible effect on the wire despite whacking it gently, harder, with venom and even asking my husband to have a go. I can only assume it’s the wrong type of hammer because it’s a hammer – there isn’t much scope for user error. Is there? In the end I resorted to using the DIY hammer again.

I also made some regular buttons and a toggle bead. To make the buttons, I used the edges of the kaleidoscope sheet I made for the shank button. Because I had laid the cane slices over scrap “mud” clay I had to add a layer of clay to the back and edges of the buttons. I used orange because that is supposed to be my focal colour, but after I had made a few I thought brown would have given more definition.

This week I have been inspired to make some polymer clay kaleidoscope canes by Teresa Pandora Salgado’s class on the Virtual Retreat.

Teresa Pandora Salgado

I’m surprised I don’t make more canes since this is what originally got me hooked on polymer clay. I’m pleased with how these came out – I think the patterns look like designs from antique biscuit tins.

Unfortunately as I was a bit impatient with mixing colours and blends I didn’t end up with as much cane as I’d like, so I don’t know if I will get to try scayning (sculpting + caning) with these. I’m planning to use these in toggles for my 2015 Polymer Clay Challenge so I want to focus on the engineering of that without the added dimension of petals.

I can picture some fantastic focal pendants though… [Insert more TIME here!]

Christmas, geometric, kaleidoscope cane, polymer clay, tree ornament

I have not been posting much recently because I am still working on gifts for Christmas so I can’t show any of them yet…

Here are some tree ornaments I made back in 2009. They are flat polymer clay disks (made using thick slices of kaleidoscope cane so that the design is the same on both sides) with gift ribbon tied in two knots to make a loop with curls on top. They look a bit primitive to me, but I read once that looking back on your work with embarrassment is a sign that you have grown.

I plonked them on the scanner to get this image (can you tell?).
